We were in Flores basically for a pit stop between Caye Caulker and Lanquin so we were only there overnight but it is a beautiful place and I would 100% recommend anyone going to Guatemala to go there. Surrounded by a huge lake, Flores has so much charm about it.
How to get there: bus
We came from Caye Caulker and there are ‘travel agents’ on the island who sell you tickets for particular bus companies. We went with Marlin Espadas and it cost us US$25 (plus you get back on the water taxi to the main land) and the bus company is right there on the dock. People are very friendly and tell you where to go. The bus was air conditioned and comfortable… Until you hit the boarder. So at the border you have to pay some bullshit tax which is about US$40 I think and the. You walk through, get your passport stamped by Belize then walk across a road with no signs to Guatemala border security and get your passport stamped by then. W the. Changed on to a much smaller bus but it had aircon and weak wifi… Better than nothing. The bus took us right to our hostel as coincidentally we were staying at the hostel that they work out of. Lewis who works for them is so nice and extremely helpful and helped us book our future bus tickets for our various locations around Guatemala. He made things very easy for us.
Accommodation: Green Monkey Hostel
When I first booked this place, I was hesitant because it looks bootleg in the photos and the walls are painted bright green… Like not even charming Guatemalan green… BRIGHT FLURO GREEN! I’m glad I booked here though as the bus went right here and we got picked up right there the next day for our next bus. The beds we’re comfy and the sheets were really soft! I would for sure stay here again. Staff all very helpful and you get toast and coffee for brekky.
Things to do:
AVOID THE BIRDS AT NIGHT: there are literally hundreds of these birds that sit on a group of power lines and just shit everywhere. I’m not afraid of birds but put hundreds of them together and risk getting shit on and I have a problem!! Thankfully there are us around them haha.
The Lake: it’s everywhere do you cant miss it. The lake is so pretty and has a real South East Asia vibe to it. You can take these little boats across the lake and they look cute… So good photo ops here haha
