Several years ago, I was engaged in active conversations about the differences between the roles of Product Manager and Product Owner. At the time, I shared a high level perspective aggregated from the conversation, including thoughts from several of the sources used. Below is a snipit from the post with a link to the full read:
To be clear, I am a firm believer in the underlying principles behind the Agile manifesto and the benefits the approach brings in more swiftly adjusting to the changing needs of the market, the customer, or competition. But I am also a firm believer that in order to keep the organization “strategically-driven” vs. becoming “needs-driven”, having good product management practices in place is necessary.
Today, I wanted to revisit the conversation. Not because anything has changed, in fact I still hold to the premise set forth from those conversations and the subsequent post. Both roles are critical to the success of the organization.
But recently I’ve delved deeper into the details behind the competencies which define success for each role, and thought it worth sharing.
